Snow Removal Tips: Keeping Your Driveways and Walkways Safe and Clear

With winter’s arrival, snow can transform our homes into a winter wonderland. However, it also brings the challenge of keeping driveways and walkways safe and clear. At Cutter Construction, we know the importance of effective snow removal for safety and accessibility. Let’s dive into some practical tips to tackle snow removal efficiently.

Understanding the Importance of Snow Removal

Snowy driveways and walkways are more than just an inconvenience; they can be hazardous. Accumulated snow can lead to slippery surfaces, posing a risk of falls and injuries. Timely and proper snow removal is crucial for maintaining safe access to and from your home.

Preparing for Snowfall

  • Weather Monitoring: Keep an eye on the weather forecast to anticipate snowfall. Being prepared ahead of time can make the snow removal process much smoother.
  • Gathering the Right Tools: Equip yourself with the necessary tools for snow removal, such as a sturdy shovel, salt or ice melt, and possibly a snow blower for larger areas.

Effective Snow Shoveling Techniques

  • Shovel Often: It’s easier to shovel smaller amounts of fresh snow than to deal with a heavy accumulation. If snowfall is ongoing, consider shoveling a few times throughout the day.
  • Proper Body Mechanics: Use your legs, not your back, to lift snow. Push the snow when possible rather than lifting to reduce strain.
  • Shoveling Patterns: Start from the middle of driveways and walkways and push snow towards the edges. This technique reduces the amount of snow you need to lift and move.

Snow Blower Usage

  • Safety First: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for operating a snow blower. Be cautious of the machine’s moving parts and never attempt to clear jams by hand.
  • Efficient Patterns: Move the snow blower in a pattern that efficiently clears the area without unnecessarily moving snow multiple times.

Dealing with Ice

  • Ice Melt Application: Apply salt or ice melt to your driveways and walkways to prevent ice formation. Be mindful of the type of ice melt you use, as some can be harmful to pets or your lawn.
  • Regular Inspection and Maintenance: Regularly check for icy patches and reapply ice melt as needed, especially after clearing snow.

Customer Reviews

In one word: Outstanding! These guys are craftsmen, who take great pride in their work. They don’t cut corners, and go above and beyond what is expected. And to a man, every one of the men who worked on our project (a 9’ X 20’ Terex Deck) were personable, friendly, and fun to have around. Mike Cutter worked with me to get the price point I wanted on the project, and it turned out much nicer than either my wife or I could have hoped for. Highly recommend Cutter Contruction!

Went with Cutter Construction even though their bid was a little higher. Bryan did a lot of leg work with the city to make sure we were compliant with city zoning. Great work. Great communication.

Cutter did a great job replacing our driveway. They kept us informed when there were delays in their schedule (due to weather, not over-promising). They responded quickly to any of our phone calls, they honored their original quote, they worked hard (in some VERY hot weather) & they were as careful as possible with our yard and garage. We definitely recommend them.

Cutter is well managed. The guys work extremely hard! Currently, I don't feel worthy of this beautiful driveway. My project did involve a drain, which isn't as common. It was also a chance to train newer employee, bringing some value to them as well. Many of us are still fragile from derecho. Hope I made them feel welcome with treats. Many thanks!
